An interesting alternative to my usual routine, the year started off with an opportunity to explore a new medium. Invited to build a temporary, combustible sculpture at a Burning Man-style event in the Garden Route in February 2022, I responded by bringing together elements from the landscape and the social event itself. The landscape is agricultural with a guest farm that is frequented by a baboon troupe inhabiting the mountain nearby. I visited their cave and found it a stinking mess of social markers. Their inquisitive behaviour was naïve when I approached – the youngsters peeping over the ledge and the adults feigning disinterest – signs that they are comfortable with human contact. As the event date approached a variety of people started filling the venue with their exciting movement, unusual attire, and determination to have a good time. I was apprehensive, fearing that the classical art historical reference might be lost on the part crowd, but soon the pre- event euphoria allayed any fears and Bernini’s Ecstasy of St. Theresa seemed more appropriate than ever. By absurdly replacing the cupid with a baboon seemed to work visually after all. Made from the local wattle saplings and paper, the medium priced remarkably resilient and seemed to sit well in the landscape. On the night of setting fire to the sculpture, participants were invited to light a candle and perhaps write a note to fit among the kindling. A photographer expressed appreciation for ritual. A woman related to me privately her experience of having recently been burgled by baboons, expressing feelings of violation and anger. Silence fell over the crowd of couples seated on the grass.
