Tankwa Artscape Residency

“Thank you Mark Wilby of Climax Films for capturing an idea of what it feels like painting Walker Bay, and Grootbos Private Nature Reserve for providing the location and footage.”

South African artist Niel Jonker works on location in the south western Cape town of Baardskeerdersbos. Niël Jonker’s small landscape panels are moments in time captured by the human eye and filtered by emotions in a manner that cameras can never learn.

Niël presenting the Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu with his 80th birthday present.

“The highlight must be meeting the Archbishop Desmond Tutu and giving him a bronze sculpture during this, his eightieth year. He is such a warm, loving and unassuming (and short!) man possessing so large a capacity to love and give, he left me humble and learning the meaning of being blessed.”
